PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

BGE's Transmission and Substations Large Projects Engineering team is focused on the engineering, design, and execution of substation projects within the BGE service territory. The team's mission is drive the execution of design and engineering deliverables associated with large capital expansion projects, including the construction of new 115kV and 230kV substations to support growing customer load, as well as supporting the rebuild of existing tranmission and distribution infrastructure.  

Under minimum supervision, coordinates and develops complex designs, specifications, and engineering drawings for special and major projects. Coordinates the activities of and provides technical guidance for designers, drafters, survey personnel, and contractors assigned to special or major projects. Collaborates with engineers by performing such duties as, preparing reports and estimates, making technical calculations, conducting investigations, and monitoring field tests and surveys. Identifies specifications and codes necessary to comply with requirements of governmental agencies and other utility companies and acquires necessary approvals and permits. Reviews project designs prepared by others for adherence to all regulatory agency and Company standards. Prepares layouts, sketches, material requisitions, and finished drawings for permits and construction. Advises contractor and Company personnel regarding solutions to special problems in design of facilities and systems not covered by formal standards. Makes site visits to develop and review designs for construction and to solve special construction problems. May be required to respond to emergency events.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

JOB SCOPE

 

Designer positions will focus on quality assurance of design deliverables produced by EOCs/SEOCs.

This will require an understanding of BGE substation standards/practices and industry knowledge/best practices; interaction/mentorship with engineering and design consultants; and written and verbal communication to provide feedback, formal review comments.  Designers will assist the team/key project stakeholders in adhering to engineering and design schedules.  Other duties will involve resolution of design issues which may require discussion and assessment with the team or coordinating reach back support from Substation Engineering Design and Standards (SEDS) and Automation and Technology (A&T).  Other responsibilities will include estimating of internal resource hours and/or contractor hours to execute work, updating of project activities (Primavera, Asset Suite 8), review of material lists, and design support for emergent work.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge:Thorough knowledge of gas and/or electric engineering and construction standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Skills/Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to develop project requirements and prepare complex designs, finished drawings, and calculations requiring limited engineering theory.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, manage, and coordinate multiple work assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret utility drawings, site plans, topographic maps, and highway construction drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to make mathematical calculations, make detailed field surveys, and apply standards necessary to determine design requirements.
  • Ability to use personal computers and computer aided design and drafting systems.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, and to anticipate and resolve problems promptly.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving standards.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Technical Occupations Test (TECH).
  • May be required to become a Notary Public in the State of Maryland, depending on specific assignment.
  • Education/Experience:High School Diploma and over eight years job related work experience, including at least four years experience in the design and drafting of gas and/or electric utility systems; or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with the following skills and/or experience preferred:

  • Possess thorough knowledge of AutoCAD Design
  • Experience using Solidworks software for the production of construction documents w/in utility engineering units
  • Experience using AutoCAD for the production of design & construction documents w/in a utility engineering unit organization
  • Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Understanding of hardware required to run the above applications
  • Other beneficial experience:
  • AutoDesk Vault
  • AutoDesk Recap or equivalent

  • Possess knowledge of Substation Civil Design Construction Documents:
  • Building Permit Plans
  • Zoning – Special Exception Plans
  • Grading, Fencing, & Roadway Plans
  • Site Development Plans – Sediment Erosion, Drainage, Landscaping, Storm Water Management, Plan & Details
  • Soil Boring Plan & Data – Geotechnical Studies
  • Foundation Location Plan
  • Foundation Details
  • Steel Setting Plans
  • Steel Structure Assembly & Detail Drawings
  • Fire Protection Plan & Details
  • Architectural Plan & Details
